In January 2022, Peru suffered one of the largest ecological crises in its history.
6000 barrels of oil were spilled into the sea off Ventanilla, a district in the department of Lima, the capital of Peru, affecting 18,000 meters of beach and impacting protected natural areas. This incident has led to the death of animals, contamination of their natural habitats, and has also affected artisanal fishing businesses, thus jeopardizing the basic food source for many families in local areas.
